IAAPA was great!

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Expo in Orlando, Florida last week was wonderful!

This showcase brings so many different vendors under one roof that it makes your head spin. Special effects, inflatables, hot dog carts, rides, animatronics, scenery, vending, ticketing, maintainance, popcorn machines, software, 3-D theaters and even dinner in the sky.

The sights, sounds and smells were amazing!

One of my favorite displays was from Scarefactory. This animatronic headless horseman reared up on it's hind legs while the horseman swung his sword...very cool.

The Expo can be overwhelming in it's size and complexity. Preplanning helps but so many things grab your attention once inside. This is the place to find amusement and attraction vendors and see the latest in the industry. IAAPA will be returning next fall to Orlando and non-members are usually invited on the last day. I'll see you there!

Being all things to all people

Aesop once said, "Please all and you will please none."

Trying to please everyone is a tempting trap but doomed to failure. Chuck McKay at Fishing for Customers has a great post about the benefits of specialization. He makes the point that specialists are more successful than generalists but everyone is afraid of leaving potential customers behind. Chuck argues that it doesn't work that way. He makes a good case for rethinking your strategy and defining yourself more precisely.

This applies to hotels, restaurants, tours, attractions, museums, people and every aspect of the tourism business. What is your brand really? What are you known for?

Even cities have a certain quality, a distinct personality that sets them apart. Boston isn't the same as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami or Washington, D.C.; the list goes on and on. They don't even try to be. But there is something I see more and more in my travels. The homogenization of many aspects of these cities. The loss of local flavor and personality. Starbucks is a classic and overused example. So is Walmart. But it exists on a smaller scale too. How many times can you visit similar sites, tours, eateries and experiences everywhere you go before it doesn't matter where you go. It's all the same.

Travelers today seem to want familiar and unusual. Variety and sameness. The opportunity lies in specialization whether for yourself or your tourism related business. Don't try to be like everyone else. Don't say "me too!" anymore. Decide who you are and be it with all your might.

Will you "miss" some customers at the end of the day...yes. The upside is developing a true identity in the marketplace and creating loyal, even rabid, fans.

Who are you and why should I give you my money? Better decide before it's too late.

Spy secrets revealed

When you tour Washington D.C. you have to visit the very popular International Spy Museum. This one-of-a-kind museum has hosted over 3 Million visitors since it opened in 2002. Infamy

Air Force Brigadier General Paul Tibbets just died. He was 92 years old and requested that no funeral be held and no marker be placed on his grave. He was concerned that these memorials might draw protest. Protest for what he and his crew flying the Enola Gay did on August 6, 1945. They dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. It's estimated that over 200,000 people lost their lives as a result of these two explosions. Six days later World War II ended with the surrender of Japan.

My Uncle Harry was one of almost a million U.S. soldiers staged in the Philippines at that time...waiting to see if the bombs ended the war. If they did not, an invasion was planned.

I learned this weekend about a program called Honor Flight dedicated to bringing the remaining World War II veterans to Washington D.C. at no cost to tour the WWII Memorial in their honor. They estimate that 1200 of these veterans are passing away each day. I saw a man in the street that wore a t-shirt saying "Freedom isn't really free." The Sky and Sea Spectacular took place in Jacksonville, Florida this weekend featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. It all reminded me of my mother and my father and a visit I made earlier this year to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. It all made me pause and reflect.

During these challenging times, I think it's important to take the long view. Now is an excellent time to look back on American history and see where we came from and where we are going. Here are a few spots to get you started.

Tour Boston and walk the Freedom Trail. Visit Paul Revere's house and tour Old Ironsides. Stand in the Old South Meeting House and visit Fanueil Hall.

Tour Washington D.C. and see where laws are made. Tour Mount Vernon and Ford's theater. Stand at the Wall and visit all the monuments to our Nation and it's citizens.

Tour Philadelphia and see the Liberty Bell. Be moved at the National Constitution Center and visit Independence Hall. Experience where it all began.

There are thousands of stories and places and people but time is running out for some. Spend a little time with the Greatest Generation before they are all gone. Thank them for their sacrifices and humble service to America. Travel and tour the places where history was made. Do it now. Thanks, Mom and Dad...

We're Expanding

A spirited discussion at Theme Park Insider about ride seats not being big enough for many guests. It seems that adults and children are getting bigger since many of the attraction rides and vehicles were first designed. This debate extends to the travel industry also. It's a sensitive subject for many and the leading tourism, travel and hospitality industries are rethinking and redesigning for today's larger guests. A good time to look around your vehicles and facilities to see if you are keeping up with current trends.

From my perspective, guests are getting larger in general. School groups now have ten year olds as tall as their teachers. This is a trend that is not going to decline. So, how do we accommodate this trend? As you'll see from the discussions, some believe we shouldn't at all. What do you think?

I love Disney

I love Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida because of the details. The extraordinary details of every experience within those walls. Yes, I understand that it is a created world. Yes, I will still visit Europe even though I've been to Epcot and yes, I get the part about the crowds, prices and merchandising. Still, I love it.

For example, I was there for the weekend and wanted to ride Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. Got there early and headed for "Asia" to get my fastpass (sweet). Imagine my surprise when I crossed the bridge, looked to my right and there was "Everest" rising up above the river. Everyone stopped to look and snap photos. No, it was not even close to the size and grandeur of the real Mount Everest but that's not what it's intended to be. I love Disney because I take it for what it is. A themed experience. A recreated wonderland of sights and sounds. An appetizer and a dessert and sometimes the main dish. Now that I saw the mountain, I couldn't wait to ride the ride and wasn't disappointed. From the fantastic Tibetan queue line scenery to the exciting runaway train premise that pushed us back in our seats to avoid the Yeti, this coaster experience delivered.

So many attractions and tourist offerings fall short for me because the details are missing. They just go part of the way with just a little theming or a mediocre program. Lackluster staff or dirty grounds. You can tell when effort is made and that's one of the ways Disney stands out for me. They make the effort every day.

My highlights for this trip included Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom, Tower of Terror at MGM, Test Track at Epcot and of course, the Food and Wine Festival. This is my third year at the festival and I enjoy it every time. Started with pomegranate kirs and escargot in France and finished with sushi and Kirin Ichiban's in Japan. It's fun to speak to the staff from the native countries represented but I was baffled by Oklahoma this year. The whole staff was from Michigan! Go figure. Even Disney can miss the details once in awhile. More photos of my Disney adventure at Flickr.

Another great visit to Walt Disney World because I paced myself and took the time to explore. Hope you get a chance to visit the Food and Wine Festival before it ends. I can't recommend the lamb chops but I can suggest the 12th anniversary Sam Adams Lager. Good stuff. See you in Orlando.

San Diego Zoo animals are safe

The Disney Blog reports that animals at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park are safe but some of the grounds were damaged. Employees are on hand to help with fire control and care for the animals. Hang in there.

Shuttle Discovery you are go for launch

Shuttle Discovery launched from the Kennedy Space Center complex at 11:38 and was a sight to behold! Up, up, up into the burning blue. A beautiful white trail with a little fire at the end and she was out of sight.

Don't forget that the Shuttle is soon to retire. Get it while it's hot. I got an email from KSC last week saying they still had a few viewing spaces available for today's launch, just a week out. That's good news if you want to see one of these modern marvels of technology before it's too late. Here's the latest from NASA

Respecting each other

Nice post at communityguy.com by Jake McKee about respecting your customers. Turns out that when he worked at Lego sometimes folks there thought that passionate customers who bought huge quantities of Lego's were odd. His point is that all of us are odd and we should respect those differences.

I work with Creatives every day and think this analogy extends internally as well as externally for people in the tourism business. You should never have disdain for your guests or customers since we all have our parlor tricks and don't be so quick to dismiss your co-workers as "weird", "strange" or "odd" either.

I remember my 8th grade yearbook filled with comments about me like, "you're not like anyone else I know" or "you're the strangest person I have ever met". At the time, I wasn't sure how to take these remarks but now I get it. Of course, I was different. These critical differences have led to my success today. I managed to nuture my interesting qualities and navigate the real world at the same time. (I thank my family and friends for encouraging that process!)

I often think of the creatives I work with as the Island of Misfit Toys and born out of that stew of different viewpoints, backgrounds and approaches comes massive creativity. I'm often surprised, astonished and delighted at the ideas, fresh approaches and unattainable visions that come from these sessions which lead to real, measurable, outstanding tours, performances and presentations. Most days it's like herding cats. That scares some people.

Where would we be if everyone looked, thought and acted the same way? Pretty boring! We spend so much time with people in this business that it is easy to get jaded and look for the worst. So the next time you are quick to judge someone who isn't like you, take a moment and be thankful. What a wonderful world we live in filled with interesting people. Vive la difference...

Ghosting in Savannah

Savannah, Georgia is a town I enjoy. History, architecture and creepiness combine with creative, eccentric folks living there for a singular experience. Of course, it rained non-stop.

I was doing a ride-along on our Ghosts and Gravestones in Savannah, which starts at the riverfront and goes to the Sorrel Weed House for the big finish. As always, I had a blast.

The ghost stories are well told and the atmosphere of the Sorrel Weed House is spooky. (Major kudos to Danica for the excellent design and art work of the Voodoo Room.) Everyone contributes so much here and SCAD is a great resource.

Both Savannah and St. Augustine have a natural creepiness similar to New Orleans in my opinion. Maybe it's the spanish moss? Just seems to be a thickness, a heaviness that lingers over them and makes the shadows longer. One of my favorite things is to walk in these towns when they are quiet and dark. Listening, looking and remembering. See you in Savannah.

Ghosting in St. Augustine

Had the pleasure of a ride-along on our Ghosts and Gravestones in St. Augustine, Florida and was blown away by the Ghost Characters again. Part of my job with Historic Tours of America is reviewing our offerings for quality assurance and I'm usually delighted. Tonight was no exception.

We are graced here with excellent actors from both Flagler College and Pedro Menendez High School. When our ghost host revealed that he was a high school senior I was floored! A very seasoned performance.

Going into The Spanish Military Hospital, The Old Drug Store and the finale at The Old Jail was just spine-tingling. Every character we met in these places was outstanding. Great storytelling.

You never feel alone in this town, even when the streets are empty. Four Hundred and Forty-two years of conflict, high emotion and unfinished business have left their lingering impressions in St. Augustine. As we approach Halloween, the air becomes a little thicker and the unseen voices a little louder. See you at the cemetery...

The Perfect Crab Cake

Get this. I'm trying a new restaurant called the Shellfish Grille in St. Augustine, Florida near my house when the waiter introduces himself and announces the specials. Mussels, Pasta, Fish of the day and then...crab cakes. He said "Crab cakes" just like that. I fixed his gaze on mine and said as I have hundreds of times before, "I'm from Maryland...are they really good?"

Now most servers given this information would begin to backpedal. Knowing I'm a Marylander, born on the Chesapeake with Old Bay seasoning in my veins they would say something like, "Well, many people order them" or "they're popular around here" to quietly steer me away from a mediocre cake.

Our waiter did no such thing. In fact he leaned into me just a bit with a slight smile and said, "They're really, really good." Piffle, I thought. The gauntlet is thrown. Bring on the alleged Crab Cakes!

I sat rehearsing my reaction when he would bring the so-called crab cakes out from the kitchen. So confident...so cocky. As I had so many times before, I would take a small bite, roll my eyes and in a voice loud enough for all to hear announce, "These are okay, but not as good as the ones in Maryland." Triumph! I couldn't wait to put them in their place.

To me the perfect crab cake is loaded with fresh lump meat and light seasoning. Just enough binder to hold it together and heated golden brown. Many of the ones I've tried over the years are like deep fried, crab-flavored turkey stuffing and filled with onions and peppers. Awful.

You must know this about me. I'm a foodie. Not a food snob. I love fresh food prepared with care. Whether it's creme brulee or vanilla pudding. Filet mignon or hamburgers. Make it right. Care about what you do. I have driven two hours out of my way and passed 100 restaurants to get to that one place that makes great BBQ. I know...

The moment of truth quickly arrived at the Shellfish Grille and the plate was set before me. True, the cakes looked good. Golden brown, lump crab meat. I took a generous bite and dropped my fork. Images flooded my mind from long ago. On the pier lifting the crab traps... sitting with my mother at Timbuktu's... at the Narrows Restaurant on the Eastern Shore...Captain Billy's laugh at Pope's Creek.

I quickly wiped a tear from my cheek as the waiter asked again. "How are they?" I wanted to run to the kitchen and kiss the chef. All I managed was to squeak out, "These are the best Crab Cakes I've eaten in Florida." And they were.

I've returned to eat the crab cakes at the Shellfish Grille again and again. Like a father checking on his newborn child, I have to look just one more time. Now I've joined the Cult of the Crab Cake there. The members exchange knowing glances across the crowded dining room and share stories of other, lesser cakes from the past. We all now live in a secret Crab Cake paradise in St. Augustine, Florida. I am content...

Three cheers for Josh Hallett and his friends. Blogorlando was spectacular! Well, as spectacular as an "unconference" on blogging should be.

We gathered at Rollins College in Orlando, Florida to learn, share and participate with some of the sharpest minds available. Many don't see the opportunity but every tourism related business would benefit from joining the conversation here.

Social media, networking and web presence were discussed and debated throughout the day. One highlight was Shel Israel, author of Naked Conversations who kicked off the events and added great insight. He was generous with his time and his knowledge. So were all of the speakers there, really. Great group of people.

We resist Change. Change is inevitable. What now?

The buggy whip company and the iceman lose their market. I once read: "How many great railroad companies from the 1800's became great airline companies in the 1900's? Zero. They were too busy trying to promote the railroad at the time."

Surely the airplane is a passing fad?

Change is inevitable.

Great post at Passport to Dreams Old and New about changing at Disney. Sometimes the attractions we love or remember fondly go away and something new takes their place. This is a successful strategy for Disney and others. It keeps things fresh for the guests and allows them to return over and over. It's a blend and a balance of the old and the new. I suspect that the Haunted Mansion will never go away but elements will be refurbished, renewed and improved.

Fear of Loss is much more powerful than Desire for Gain. That is why change is difficult.

Clear your schedule, pack a cooler and strap yourself in on October 19th at 9pm when the Travel Channel presents Most Haunted Live at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, just south of San Francisco.

A Seven (yes, I said seven) Hour marathon of paranormal investigation and things that go bump in the night. I'm exhausted already. How will they maintain such an event before the channel changes? I do not know. Guess we'll have to watch and see...er...wait a minute. No doubt, it's gonna be a hootenanny.

The Winchester Mystery House was creepy when I visited during the day. I can only imagine how it will be at night. Interestingly you can interact with the investigation team online offering suggestions for room searches, etc. Great way to lead up to Halloween my Friends. Just don't call me for seven hours on October 19th. (Whew!)

Red Bull Air Race in San Diego

Our SEAL Tour crew at Old Town Trolley in San Diego, California is all a twitter about the Red Bull Air Races this past weekend. Here is a great Youtube video from Between Random Planets showing an earlier practice takeoff from the USS Midway which is now a tourist attraction in San Diego.

The interesting thing for me is how events are becoming more like attractions in some places. The draw is often excellent and folks follow these types of events like concerts by their favorite band. It's an interesting, reborn model for tourism.

My first question would be, does it help the local economy?

Experience from the Superbowl would suggest that not every type of business benefits from big draw events in their community.

Can local repetitive events compete with standing tourist attractions? Are they an enhancement or a distraction?

With so many activities competing for our limited time and attention, perhaps these types of events are the wave of the future for some tourism businesses. Museums have great success with traveling exhibits like Tutankhamun. Then again, Cirque du Soleil reinvented the traveling circus and eventually developed permanent locations. Now they are sending out traveling shows again!

We sure need to be flexible these days don't we? I guess everything old is new again. See you in San Diego.

Legoland: Still playing with Legos

Legoland in Carlsbad, California near San Diego, California has won the prestigious 2007 Golden Ticket Award for Best Children's Park.

I loved Legos growing up and spent hours playing with them. Now my daughter is amazed to see the complex sculptures that are made out of them at places like Downtown Disney in Orlando, Florida. Some things never grow old.

Wowing your guests

Great article by way of Brand Autopsy from Jeffrey Summers at Building Better Restaurants about removing Host stands at restaurants. Makes a good case against them. But what takes it's place? How do you meet and greet your guests?

This of course applies to many tourist venues, not just restaurants. My best meet and greet experience happened in Baltimore, Maryland years ago. I went to a restaurant in "Little Italy" and could not believe how they handled me. I was warmly greeted at the door which was held open so I could see the next greeter at the bottom of the stairs who led us up to the next greeter at the top of the stairs who introduced us to our waiter who then sat us at our special table! Each of them was introduced by name and all the while they chatted with us and made us feel like family. Big smiles, great eye contact and what I call the "Verbal Embrace".

Nothing annoys me more than being greeted by someone who wishes they were someplace else. No enthusiasm, no interest. They just don't seem to care. By the time I reached my table in Baltimore they could have served me anything and I would have enjoyed it!

That's the power of good first impressions and sincere human connections. Of course, many tourism businesses rely on quality interactions with their guests. Is it time to spruce up your daily guest contacts? These moments should be like a dog wagging it's tail with joy when it sees you. Otherwise, I could just stay home.

Halloween is just around the corner and one of my favorite Holidays. As a kid, it was the candy. Now, it's the fantasy. I love seeing people dress up and become other characters. (You can tell a lot about people by the characters they choose). Pirates, Pop stars or witches the spectacle is endless.

Pirate Soul

Just came across a Historic Tours of America team visit pic from Pat Croce's Pirate Soul Museum in Key West, Florida. We were previewing it when it first opened and I have been back many times. It sort of combines acting and storytelling like our Shipwreck Historeum and the treasures of Mel Fisher's Maritime Museum with an enhanced, rollicking pirate theme.

Of course, the Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean, clone helps and snappy technologies imagineered inside are great but what I like best is the storytelling and authentic artifacts like the flag in the photo. This is one of only two, known, surviving Jolly Roger pirate flags in the world! In a fairly small space they have an astonishing collection of rare and interesting pirate regalia.

This just might be the museum attraction of the future combining authentic objects with recent technology, good storytelling and solid performance. It really strikes all of the senses. The debate rages on. It is important to preserve our past but I favor showcasing it in the most interesting way possible. (The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois and the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia are good examples.)

I predict with shrinking audiences and increasingly short attention spans that this trend will blossom and morph. "Don't bore me!" is the battle cry from today's guest.

After Midnight in Savannah

Savannah, Georgia is like an old friend to me. The fact that it was founded in 1733 would be enough but I've also met wonderful people, eaten great food and been creeped out a time or two. My company operates Old Town Trolley tours and Ghosts and Gravestones here so I am fortunate to work with SCAD students and creatives all over town. (I even wrote a book about hauntings there called Ghost and Gravestones of Savannah, Georgia.) The charms of Savannah are endless and enticing. But time marches on.

Many years have passed since John Berendt's best selling novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was published and made into a wonderful movie directed by Clint Eastwood. Fewer and fewer folks are as interested or familiar with the story.

So what now? What do you do when the big thing that spurs tourism in your area begins to fade? You reinvent yourself. Yes, it is possible to continue promoting your attraction, area or service after things change.

Now Savannah is hailing itself as "The Creative Coast" and attracting talented artists of all kinds and the people who want to see them. Riffing off the successes of the Savannah School of Art and Design (SCAD) and cooking celebrities like Paula Dean, Savannah is forging a bright new future. The reality is that things change and we need to be willing to change too. Focusing that effort in a useful way is the key. Change for the sake of change is "confusing motion with action" as Hemingway once said. Developing solid strategy and bold innovation wins the day. See you in Savannah.

Shuttle launches dwindling

Just got reminded that the Kennedy Space Center Complex in Florida has only 14 more shuttles scheduled to launch before retiring in 2010. Better see one while you still can! The next one is scheduled for October 23rd.

Also got word about some very cool military aeriel demonstrations scheduled there in November. They are part of the 50 year celebration of space by the World Space Expo. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute teams will be there along with demo's of other great aircaft.

Baby Elephant's First Birthday

The Wild Animal Park , which is part of the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California just celebrated the one year Birthday of this Baby Elephant, Khosi. (More pics here courtesy of NBC San Diego) They made the cake out of vegetables and ice with a carrot for a candle! Something about baby elephants just cracks me up. They look like old men in suits. Khosi now weighs in at 850 pounds. Enjoy...

I was in a staff meeting at 8:46am when the world changed on this date in 2001. When I visited Ground Zero in New York City earlier this year it was unreal. The scope of this tragedy is hard to comprehend. Where this will lead in the future I cannot say. I do know that we will always remember this day. Travel well and be safe.

The 442nd Birthday Celebration for St. Augustine, Florida went off beautifully thanks to the efforts of John Fraser, Michelle Reyna and the rest of the gang at the Fountain of Youth. (You can see a few more pics of the event at Flickr.) A good time was had by all and I participated in the Historic Timeline as British Merchant and notorious scalliwag, Jesse Fish, along with the two esteemed gentlemen in the photo. The arrival of Don Pedro Menendez at the Mission of Nombre de Dios was met with great fanfare and cannon firings. There was a "first thanksgiving foods" cooking contest, cutting of the cake at the Colonial Spanish Quarter and a "Jollification" at the end of the night. We ended up at the Taberna del Gallo listening to my favorite group, The Bilge Rats, singing sea shanty's. There is no finer Shantyman then Brad Taylor-Hicks. All in all, a wonderful 442nd birthday celebration for the Nation's Oldest City.

This is my buddy Jim doing what he does best. Defying Death. He is so attuned to the hundreds of gators here that it's eerie. I'll pass on the hand feeding of 12 foot gators, thank you very much. I'm brave... but really.

The St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park in St. Augustine, Florida is a sheer delight. One of the finest animal sites I have ever visited. They hold the rare distinction of exhibiting every known species of the 23 crocodilians in existence. They even have white albino alligators and the ferocious saltwater crocodile, Maximo weighing in at 1250 pounds and stretching to over 15 feet.

Of course, my favorite shows are the feedings but they also have fantastic birds including a great vulture display and a world famous rookery where you can take photographs of nesting birds only inches away. Giant Galapagos tortoises, monkeys and emus. The list goes on and on. I appreciate that they continuously upgrade and improve this already wonderful place. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park is one of my favorite stops in St. Augustine. This is a can't miss in Florida.

Scenic boat cruises of St. Augustine

The Scenic Cruise aboard the Victory III in St. Augustine, Florida is a nice way to see the City from the water. The Usina Family has been providing this narrated service for four generations. During the trip around the Matanzas Bay you see the the Castillo de San Marcos, Mission of Nombre de Dios Cross, The Lighthouse and the Bridge of Lions restoration project in full swing. Snacks and drinks are available on board and the ship is stable and stays in the intercoastal waters for about 90 minutes. Make sure to talk to the Captain who is always one of the Usina Family. A nice tradition in the Oldest City.

We miss you Otto C. Lightner

Yes, he is actually buried right out in front of the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida. Otto C. Lightner was a collector of collections and left behind a wonderful legacy inside these walls. Housed in this historic building, built in 1887, are three floors of splendors from America's Gilded Age. Cut Glass, Art Glass and Stained Glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Paintings, sculptures and furniture. Victoriana, musical instruments and oddities.

I love the music room filled with self-playing instruments from a bygone era. Don't miss the sauna rooms preserved from when this building was Henry Flagler's Alcazar Hotel at the turn of the 19th Century. Another favorite is the area where the worlds largest indoor swimming pool existed at the back of the building. Now it houses antique shops and a wonderful lunch spot called the Cafe Alcazar featuring the masterful guitar playing of Richard Kuncicky. The Lightner Museum is a wonderful glimpse into America's past. Make sure to pay your respects to Mr. Lightner, too.

Old St. Augustine

I live and work in St. Augustine, Florida. The oldest, continuously occupied, European-settled City in the United States. (whew!) The town was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and the local joke is that by the time the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, St. Augustine was already up for urban renewal. It's a little, big town with lots of charm.

We're celebrating our 442nd birthday (Sept. 8th)this week with lots of festivities, including recreations of the landing of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles to establish the town, the first thanksgiving feast, 16th century entertainment, arts, crafts and the "changing of the guard". Should be lots of fun. (I even get to dress up in period clothing!)

I've lived in St. Augustine over ten years now and always enjoy the festivities, activities and interesting people in our town. You never get bored here! I'm lucky to work for Historic Tours of America and participate in Old Town Trolley Tours, The Old Jail, The Florida Heritage Museum and Ghosts & Gravestones on their behalf. The Rock

Say "Alcatraz" and most people know what you mean. This prison in the bay of San Francisco, California is well-known. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and the Birdman were guests. They say no one ever escaped. I was lucky enough to take the evening tour.

The boat was eager with anticipation as we approached The Rock. After debarking, we took a narrated walk with a Ranger to the top of the island to explore.

The audio headset tour was excellent and included the sights and sounds of this historic prison. We had plenty of time to explore and the evening light made it even more creepy. This place is filled with history and atmosphere. A visit to Alcatraz is exciting and thankfully you can escape at the end.

Abundanza

I love to eat and drink. It is a passion with me. Taking the Local Tastes of North Beach Tour in San Francisco, California was a must. I was impressed.

North Beach is the "Little Italy" of the City. On this walking tour we tasted espresso that was freshly roasted and bread right out of the oven, after visiting the kitchen to watch them make it. Next were fresh deli meats, olive oil and cheeses from local artisans followed by chocolate from one of the top ten chocolatiers in America. We visited the church where Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were married and the Purple Onion café where Bill Cosby and Phyllis Diller got their start.

The journey was wonderful and filled with San Francisco insider information. You felt like a native on this tour. Tom was very helpful and friendly, offering sightseeing and restaurant suggestions throughout the tour. Eating your way through North Beach is fantastic and he also does a Chinatown tour. Mmmmmmmmmm. Feed me.

Among Giants

I'm told that larger trees exist. Hard to imagine.

I didn't know what to expect as we traveled by bus on the Muir Woods- Sausalito tour in San Francisco, California. We arrived at a plain parking lot with a simple entrance to the Muir Woods National Monument. The driver told us to return in about 90 minutes for the trip to Sausalito. I almost missed the bus.

Once you walk down the path and leave the crowds behind you are transported to a primitive world of light and shadow. The Redwoods jut up out of the black soil and compete with each other for sunlight. Every now and then, a human, standing and staring at the majesty of this forest. Massive, splendid and rare.

A small creek dances down the middle of the paths and plays background music for us. Lush ferns carpet the ground while chipmunks scamper in and out. Light filters through thick branches to show the way. I almost missed the bus.

All the way to Sausalito my mind kept returning to Muir Woods. I couldn't stop thinking about it. That night I dreamed of sacred places and spiritual journeys. That night I slept in Muir Woods.

Mr. Toad

It’s fun when the owner/operator does the tour. I’m sure I just got lucky, but I really enjoyed the local perspective of a third generation San Franciscan. That is what Mr. Toads Tours offers in San Francisco, California. Local knowledge.

The reproduction 1918 Packard vehicle seats about 8 people and is very fun to ride in as we honked at passersby! They have a small fleet of these vintage cars that run on propane. A big part of the charm is that we could see areas that larger vehicles couldn't explore. We went behind Coit tower, up into Russian Hill and really explored the neighborhoods. It's great for small groups. It was personal and geared to the audience’s interests instead of a canned presentation on a pre-planned route. It’s the type of tour you can take more than once. I really enjoyed it. Ribbit...

Blue and Gold forever

Blue and Gold were my high school colors so naturally I noticed the Blue and Gold Fleet sightseeing cruise in San Francisco, California.

I was surprised when the professional narration on this comfortable ship turned out to be a themed show featuring Captain Nemo. It was well done and not too much.

Not only do you get a great view of the City from the water but you go under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz. The crew was friendly and efficient and there was plenty of good seating. A really nice way to get on the water is the Blue and Gold Fleet. Go team!

Liberty

The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is a “Liberty” Ship memorial is docked at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California and served as a Merchant marine Cargo vessel during WWII. These smaller, faster ships were often sunk trying to deliver there goods and the Jeremiah O’Brien is in great shape. Merchant Marine volunteers are posted around the ship to answer question on this self-guided tour. They do offer guided tours for groups of ten of more.

She is still sea worthy and takes occasional cruises in the Bay. On the 50th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion she sailed back to France for the ceremonies and is one of only two Liberty ships still in existence. Hundreds of volunteers keep her ship shape. It’s worth the effort to seek out this ship and remember the stories of WWII.

Pier 39 is fine

Pier 39 is a two-level, themed, waterfront entertainment complex is a major attraction near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. It includes 14 restaurants, 110 shops, the Aquarium, an Arcade, live performances of music and buskers, a permanent musical, a beautiful carousel, a Turbo thrill ride and a sea lion viewing area.

While I was there it was packed with people. A great blues singer sat at the entrance while a permanent stage featured an excellent juggler at the back. The Sea lion viewing area was filled and the place was hopping.

You could spend a day just exploring this area. Lots of activity, variety and fun. Pier 39 is a ball.

Hop on, Hop off

Pier 39 and the Fisherman’s Wharf area in San Francisco, California are very popular so it’s nice to have a hop on/off trolley here. The one hour narrated tour has three stops -Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square and Union Square.

The trolleys are neat and well-maintained with lots of shiny brass. Our driver/guide was friendly and interesting and threw in some personal observations from a local’s perspective.

Many people seemed to use this trolley for transportation and it offers a good familiarization of the city and its main points of interest. Sure beats walking up some of those steep hills!

The Wine Country

The locals say that the Central Coast of California near Monterey and Paso Robles is the next big thing in wine but for now Napa and Sonoma dominate the market. The Wine Country Tour from San Francisco, California is a full day overview of wine making in both places.

We visited three wineries by bus after stopping first at the Napa visitor’s center. Kirkland Ranch, Madonna and Viansa wineries were on the list with lunch on our own in downtown Sonoma. We tasted at each winery and toured at Madonna to learn the wine making process. They allowed for a good amount of free time and lunch in Sonoma was excellent at the Swiss Hotel restaurant (a suggestion from the driver). This was a light, fun day in the wine country and offers a great introduction to the process.

A Deluxe City Tour

I went on the Grayline Deluxe City tour to get an overview of San Francisco, California. I'm glad I did. We were on a large bus and navigated the narrow streets downtown before venturing out to stops at Twin Peaks, the Golden Gate Bridge and the park near the Bridge.

The narration was funny and interesting. We learned that City Hall was on a roller system to stabilize it during earthquakes. On that subject our driver said that folks who live here just get used to the idea of earthquakes.

The views were terrific and the stops were just long enough to give us a break from the bus. A good way to become acquainted with the city and see the sites. Dwayne our driver was a hoot.

Segway Johnny

This tour is a blast! The Electric Tour Company in San Francisco, California does it right.

I had never ridden a Segway before, along with most of the people in our group. A 45 minute training session fixed that and we were off. The tour starts near Fisherman’s wharf and travels toward the Golden Gate Bridge along the bay. There is lots of riding with some narration, which worked out well.

The staff at Electric tours is fantastic! They are funny, articulate and genuine. You feel welcomed and reassured no matter what your skills. The equipment is in great shape and the route is safe. The pre-tour safety session includes a short film and personal instruction until everyone feels comfortable. We then eased into the tour with lots of practice. Several stops included a nice café where you can grab a drink or snack. The experience is about three hours including 45 minutes of training. They also do a Sausalito tour and a Night tour. A great way to tour.

If you're going to San Francisco

It's my first visit to San Francisco, California and I'm already stoked. This town has an energy to it. They combine retro and modern in interesting ways. Old cable cars and streetcars beside the Trans America Pyramid Building. Very Cool.

The food is amazing! Fresh, fresh, fresh. They have also maintained their neighborhoods. Chinatown, North Beach, Russian Hill, everywhere local culture is preserved.

Lots to explore here I can tell. So, I'll just dig right in.

The Coastal Highway

The California Coastal Highway between Los Angeles and San Francisco is spectacular. I don't think I have driven a more beautiful or challenging stretch of road as between Cambria and Monterey.

Soaring mountains on one side and plunging cliffs to the sea on the other. Rockslides are not uncommon and twice I was delayed by crews clearing boulders. This route is not for the weak of heart! You need to be alert and steady on this narrow road that often twists and turns thousands of feet above the ocean with no guardrails.

Some folks like to take 17 mile drive near Carmel in addition to the coastal highway but realize that they charge $8 to enter. (The 45 minute route is organized into about 20 stops and provides a more manicured version of the coastal highway.)

I was surprised at how many hiking trails are available on this stretch and many scenic pull-overs. This is not the fastest route since speeds can slow to 15 miles per hour in some places and rarely top 40. The rewards are worth it if you’re not in a hurry and can explore the coast and all it has to offer. Make sure to gas up since towns are few and far between here. This is a great driving experience.

A Repeating Mystery

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California just south of San Francisco, is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum surrounded by a mystery. It's bizarre and beautiful.

The story goes like this: Sarah Winchester outlived her husband, who made a fortune selling firearms. Soon she was told by a spiritualist that she was cursed because of the terrible loss of life these repeating firearms represented. So she did the only thing that made sense...she began construction in 1884 and never stopped 24/7/365 for thirty-eight years to appease the angry ghosts.

What emerged after her death was a 160 room mansion filled with modern conveniences and strange architectural designs. Tiffany stained glass, gold and silver chandeliers and three elevators are a tribute to wealth, taste and style while stairs that lead nowhere, doors that open into walls and repetitive patterns of windows stop you in your tracks. What is going on here? Only Sarah Winchester knew. My creepiest moment was in the Blue Seance room where we stood silently together looking for an exit. There seemed to be no knobs or means of opening the doors from the inside. Finally, our guide revealed the hidden latch and we were free. But for just a moment, I felt like I was back there with Sarah, calling the spirits forward and trying to figure out what to build next.

Over the Bounding Main

My feet left the deck as I clutched at the rail for balance. "Hold on" ordered the Captain as he spun the wheel into the whitecaps looming ahead of us. My breakfast slammed against my stomach and I vowed not to lose it. Swallowing hard, I braced myself against the wind when "thar she blows!" snapped my head to the right.

A plume of sea water was followed by a huge speckled back gliding above the water followed by the classic tail of a Gray Whale. Sweet...

Despite the challenging conditions, I really enjoyed Chris' Whale Watch on Monterey Bay south of San Francisco, California. The boat is basic with plenty of room to walk around and the Captain knew where to find whales. We were treated to constant sightings and even watched one whale breach many times and slap the water with his flipper. Monterey Bay sits over one of the deepest marine trenches in the World which attracts huge quantities of wildlife. Even Blue whales and Orcas can be spotted here seasonally.

Make sure to spend some time on the dock at Fisherman's Wharf, too. Seals and Sea Lions are everywhere. The fresh fish and clam chowder there have been featured on the Food Network. This is a special place and a great way to spend the day enjoying marine life at it's best.

Make your way to Monterey

The Monterey Bay Aquarium south of San Francisco, California is one of the best Aquariums I have visited. The layout is beautiful and encourages you to explore. The views of Monterey Bay are spectacular and the outdoor and indoor spaces blend so well that you move easily from one to the other.

The exhibits are wonderful! (I'm a sucker for Jellyfish.) I enjoyed the Kelp Forest, the Splash Zone, Sharks and Rays and the Outer Bay. They have one of the best Kids areas I've seen with lots of chances to get close and touch sea creatures. You can spend a whole day exploring here. Lots of feedings and presentations, too.

The biggest challenge is parking. Be prepared to hunt for a spot and grab any space you see near Cannery Row. The walk is worth it. Check the website for parking suggestions to ease the search. They also run a free trolley during the summer.

The real attraction here is Monterey Bay itself and the great views from the decks at the Aquarium allow you to spot many local inhabitants. This Aquarium is a real delight. Don't miss it.

Beacon in the Darkness

What is it about lighthouses that draws us closer? Safety, security, comfort? Shelter from the storm...refuge?

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse south of San Francisco, California is such a place. Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean on a point of land, this lighthouse was built in 1872. (The original Fresnel, first order Lens weighs 8,000 pounds!)

It's still a Coast Guard navigational aid today.

The tower is closed for renovation but the grounds are open to view exhibits, snap photos, take a tour and stand on the decks overlooking the waves crashing against the rocks. They even have a 50 person hostel. Since this is close to Elephant Seal territory it's a great spot to overnight on the coast. You can't miss it!

Trapped in the Jaws

Ano Nuevo Reserve south of San Francisco, California is home to Elephant Seal breeding grounds. You can take a tour to see them in season.

Just offshore, Ano Nuevo Island is where a dramatic spectacle takes place. This is one of the few places that Great White Sharks have been observed going air born chasing their prey...seals and sea lions.

The tranquility of the beach is shattered when these animals try to run the gauntlet at sea. Great Whites up to 20 feet long, weighing nearly two tons tear through the water in search of a meal. It's explosive. The area is highly protected and regulated as you might imagine.

It brought back memories for me of a time in 1975 when I sat in a dark movie theater and saw the girl swimming and heard the theme music: Ba...dum, Ba...dum, bum, bum ,bum, bum, bum, bum...we need a bigger boat.

Hearst Castle - Ode to Excess

Yes, it's Extravagant, Astonishing and Unrestrained. It's Inspiring, Surreal and Indulgent. It's Wealth, Power and Privilege.

It's in the middle of nowhere...

Don't get me wrong. The California countryside around Hearst Castle is beautiful. San Simeon stretches with ocean and farmland as far as the eye can see. But getting to the area takes time and planning. Advanced reservations for this popular attraction are a must and at least an overnight stay is required to see everything.

I was lucky enought to book a special Friday evening tour. What makes this tour different is the historical reenactors throughout the grounds who portray party guests from the heyday of social activities here. Celebrities, moguls and royalty all flocked to this legendary location for fabled parties and events. Cary Grant and Bing Crosby were regulars. Winston Churchill visited. Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers were guests. It was THE place to see and be seen.

Construction started in 1919 through 1947 and included 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 127 acres of gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and the world's largest private zoo on over 250,000 acres. William Randolph Hearst created a publishing empire at the turn of the 20th Century and when he decided to build, money was no object. Entire ceilings purchased from Medieval European castles were installed. Priceless

antique tapestries, paintings, first edition books, Egyptian pottery, furniture and art fills the 165 rooms. It's amazing. Mr. Hearst was a man of large appetites. His guests must have had the time of their lives. Need to watch Citizen Kane once more...

Cambria, California is a popular jumping off point for Hearst Castle and it is beautiful. Some would call it a "one horse town" but that is part of the charm. The coastline is spectacular and I can't get over how good the food is in California. Everything is extra fresh and minimally prepared. A chef friend of mine once said, "food should taste like itself". Now I get it. (I had the best trout ever at the Sow's Ear Cafe.)

Folks in Cambria are very helpful and sincere. A great base camp for my adventure to Hearst Castle.

Rockin' at Morro Bay

The City of Morro Bay, California is mostly known for the huge Morro Rock rising up from the ocean. It's a working fishing village and I had a great fish sandwich there on the way to Hearst Castle. I also visited their funky little Aquarium.

This family owned attraction is dedicated to rehabilitating sea creatures since 1984 and the sea lions greet you right at the entrance. Boy, are they loud. The inside room is dark and small with murky tanks filled with a variety of animals. A huge octopus was very popular along with a good local shark exhibit. The rest of the waterfront is filled with fun shops and restaurants. It's a great place to hang out and at the end of the road you can see the fishing fleet come in with their daily catches. A nice slice of local California north of Los Angeles. Totally.

The charming Danish town of Solvang is just north of Los Angeles, California. It lies near the wineries of the Santa Ynez Valley and offers great hospitality including some amazing bakeries. The town was featured in the movie "Sideways" and their claim to fame is a taste of Denmark.

Here you can stroll the European streets, horseback ride, balloon, glide, bike, tour or visit the Hans Christian Anderson museum. Lots of events make this a wonderful place to visit. One of the highlights is the seasonal outdoor festival theater where top notch performances take place.

Plan to spend some time in this historic town and turn your cell phone off. Skoal!

North of Los Angeles in the self-proclaimed, "Home of pea soup", known as Buellton, California is Ostrichland. When you see the small black and white sign, pull over. Not only can you buy some fresh produce but for just $4 you can hang out with Ostriches and Emus. These curious animals pose for photos and you can feed them. Inside you can buy bird related products. Enormous eggs, purses, hats and yes...even meat. Give Ostrich a try. Tastes like lean beef if you don't over cook it. This is a classic roadside attraction that harkens back to another time. If you're on the road to Solvang or the Santa Ynez Valley wine country do yourself a favor and feed the birds. You'll be glad you did.

I've always been a John Wayne Fan. I love his Westerns mostly. So here I was standing outside Sid Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California and wondering why John Wayne's feet were so small. I mean really tiny. Like fall over when you take a step small. I couldn't believe it. On the screen he looked ten feet tall.

That's a big part of the appeal at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Reading the inscriptions and seeing the size of the celebrities hands and feet. Really. Of course, the interior is Hollywood glamorous but the action is outside where the crowds gather and with the crowds all manner of street entertainers. It's like a circus. Freddy vs Jason. Superman and Wonder Woman. Charlie Chaplin and Captain Jack Sparrow. What a hoot-a-nanny.

But Sid Grauman would be pleased I think. The Showman who invented Hollywood would appreciate the hubbub outside his theater where movie premiers and special events still pack'em in. As John Wayne said, "Sid, there are not enough words."

Aaaah Avalon!

When you need to escape the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, California then hop on board the Catalina Island Express shuttle and head for Avalon. In less than an hour on this high speed boat, you will be a world away on Catalina Island in the Pacific Ocean. The ship is very comfortable, serves food and makes trips throughout the day. Hotels are available on the Island, too. So are tons of activities. Tour, fish, scuba, snorkel, glass bottom boat, kayak, camp, hike; the list goes on and on.

If activity doesn't suit you then stroll the shops and restaurants right on the beautiful harbor, visit the spa or sit and people watch.

This is a great escape with a small town feel in an Island setting. Don't miss it.

Long Live the Queen

The Queen Mary in Long Beach, California is huge. Over 1000 feet with more than 2,000 portholes! The anchor chain alone weighs 45 tons and fuel economy. Howsa bout 13 feet to the gallon...

But this attraction is so much more than a ship's tour. You can do a guided or self-guided tour of the ship filled with old photos and artifacts from days gone by when royalty and celebrity stood on these decks but the cool thing is how parts of the ship have been converted. You can even spend the night.

A hotel with 365 original staterooms is available complete with spa, five restaurants, shops and banquet facilities. Events are constant from music and concerts to dinner with Psychic Peter James and The Rocky Horror Picture Show featuring a live local cast.

One of my favorite activities is the Ghosts and Legends Haunted tour. Our group explored deep into the bowels of the ship in areas not open to the public where historic tales were spun and special effects brought the many reported hauntings to life. Good stuff.

You can spend a lot of time at the Queen Mary exploring the many options. But don't get lost...some of the long-term residents aboard the ship you don't want to meet.

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California features over 12,000 animals. It is a very busy place. The exhibits meander indoors and out with the favorites being the Shark Lagoon and the Lorikeet forest. I enjoyed the Whale film projected on the walls in the main hall.

Touch tanks are popular and folks lined up for the opportunities. Animal shows and feedings were a hit too. It's fun to watch the divers hand feed in the tanks.

The aquarium is basically divided into three sections representing Northern, Southern and tropical Pacific regions. Construction is in progress to make the Aquarium even better and my visit was wonderful. Don't miss "Monsters of the Abyss" in 3D. It's creepy.

The Hollywood Wax Museum in Hollywood, California has very realistic figures. They do an excellent job on the set designs and lighting too. As you might imagine, this wax museum is dedicated to show business figures from Ron Burgundy to the Beverly Hillbillies. It's a nice mix of old and new celebrities and with good use of lighting they often look real. Because they have movie studio access, they can create authentic reproductions and in some cases use the actual prop from a movie or show including clothing. Jay Leno's suit or Hugh Hefner's pajamas and smoking jacket, for example. This is a great showcase of TV and Movie personalities to visit. Hannibal's waiting for you.

If you love movies and happen to be a fan of The Academy Awards then a tour of the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California should be on your list. The hours are limited so plan ahead.

The interior of the building is plush and the tour shows you where events take place during the Awards shows and offers some insider stories about dressing room controversy and who sits where in the Theater. We had a chance to walk up on stage in this beautiful theater and it was exciting! We also learned how they coordinate the arrival of the stars for the Red Carpet entrance. They stage all the limos from the Hotel behind the complex and simply drive around the block to the front of the building.
Oh, Hollywood magic.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is longer than I expected. It stretches to over 2300 stars. Well, they're not all "stars" it seems. The criteria for getting a star turns out to be a bit loose and includes entertainers that aren't even human! Yes, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are here. So is Olive Borden. Dan Akroyd doesn't have a star yet but Judge Judy does. Go figure.

It's fun to walk the Walk and stroll down memory lane but the best part is the colorful characters who hang out here dressed in costume for the tourists. Superman, Batman, Darth Vader, Freddy; they're all here. For a couple of bucks you can have a photo with them. Hooray for Hollywood.

Pinch me...

I saw my first magician at a friend's birthday party when I was ten. He was funny and silly and made a dove appear in a small wire cage.

I was hooked. The Art of Illusion fascinates me to this day so when I had a chance to visit the private Magic Castle Club in Los Angeles, California, I jumped at it.

The mystery begins when you are told that in order to enter this private club, you must be invited by a member or staying at the Hotel on site. I took a room and made my reservations. The formal dress code is strictly enforced with jacket and tie for men. With my Johnston & Murphy's shined to a gleam, I entered the Magic Club lobby and approached the front desk. This is where the fun began. "Just walk over to the owl on the bookcase and say Open Sesame," she instructed. The owls eyes blinked when I uttered those magical words and the bookcase slid back to allow my entry. Very cool.

The building itself dates back to 1908 and is a labyrinth of hallways, nooks and parlours. Take the time to explore the space and enjoy the historical photos and charicatures. The evening consists of five different magic shows in three seperate rooms with special guest appearances. They range from close up magic to stage shows. Five bars are spread around the large complex and a highlight was the player piano where Irma the ghost will play any tune you call out. It was eerie to watch as the group tried to stump her and couldn't. Dinner was excellent and no sooner had I sat down when who should walk in but Magic Legends Eugene Burger and Max Maven to dine at the table across from me. Most of the people there were magicians.

I soon found out why so much buzz was in the air. That night I was lucky enough to see a farewell performance by the amazing Paul Potassy. Turns out the Who's Who of magic was in attendance for this performance. I'll just say that when Siegfried (of Siegfried and Roy) sat down in front of me at the show, I was impressed.

Mr. Potassy mesmerized us all with his amazing patter and flawless illusions. At one point he cleaned out the pockets of the volunteer on stage, without his knowledge, and began producing his watch, cell phone, comb, wallet, hankerchief and pen, much to the delight of the audience.

What a special evening this is for anyone who enjoys Magic. It is a classic setting with World Class entertainment. I will remember this for the rest of my life.

Cool Beans

The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California is cool. Since their remodeling, a timed ticket system is in place and reservations are required. No parking on site so the reservation is for the bus transportation to get there.

The Observatory is perched above the valley with a great view of the Hollywood Sign. Exhibits explore space and our place in it. I loved the swinging pendulum and the Tesla coil that produces lightning! A Zeiss 12-inch refracting telescope is available if you go in the evening and during clear days Solar Telescopes are found in the Rotunda. One of the highlights is the state-of-the-art Samuel Oschin Planetarium that creates multi-media star shows. Also, the new Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon features a short film by the actor himself. Make sure to save room to eat at The Cafe with outdoor seating overlooking the valley. Some effort and planning is required to visit here but it's well worth the effort.

With all due respect, I just didn't get The Hollywood Guinness World of Records in Hollywood, California.

When I was a kid, I used to love reading about the Guinness World Records and this attraction takes many of those records and displays them. That's it. Maybe I missed something but I didn't find giant plastic vegetables and a statue of the world's tallest man that entertaining. The place was very dark and hard to navigate, too. I was just expecting something more lively I guess. Oh well.

The Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes Tour is an excellent way to learn about Hollywood, California's history. This walking tour takes you to all of the famous sites: The Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese and Egyptian Theaters, the Roosevelt Hotel, the Kodak Theater and even goes inside Stella Adler's acting studio and El Capitan Theater (owned by Disney).

One of the best features is the live audio system they use. Mike, our guide, spoke into a microphone that fed into our headsets, which could adjust for volume. I wasn't sure if I would like it at first but it was comfortable and you don't miss a word of the tour. This was a great balance of insider stories, photos and sites. The walk isn't strenuous and the pace is just right. Make the Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes Tour one of the first things you do here.

Wow. The traffic is everything they said it would be and more in Los Angeles, California. I'm staying in Hollywood, on the northern edge of Los Angeles and going anywhere is tough. The tradeoff in transportation is big. Convenience vs. Price. Public transport is cheap but takes longer. Private is more convenient but very expensive. However you decide to travel just make sure to give yourself extra time since the traffic is congested and the sites are spread out here. Sure wish I had wings!

Space...the final frontier. As a kid I would sit mesmerized by all things space related. Star Trek, Aliens, Astronomy, Astronauts and NASA.

So when I got an invitation to preview the "Shuttle Launch Experience" attraction at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, I couldn't wait. This is one part of a 10 year, 160 million dollar renovation at the complex.

The evening event started with a bang as the group walked into the complex to find great music and plenty of food and drink. They really spread out the red carpet for us. As the evening progressed we were invited to the new attraction before Mannhiem Steamroller was scheduled to play for us. Up the long gantry we went and into a holding room where the preshow was excellent. Multiple screens showed how the shuttle is launched while our video host explained the process. Everywhere were warnings and disclaimers about who should not ride for health reasons. We were ushered into another holding room that separated us into rows before the doors whooshed open and we were seated inside a shuttle recreation. Soon we launched and the shaking vehicle tilted us backwards so that we were looking straight up at the screen. We leveled off and then rocked forward after a quick emergency maneuver before landing safely. It was fun but milder than I expected. After the initial shaking, it was really quite smooth and even my friend who is scared of rides was not uncomfortable with this one.

After the ride, we ate and drank some more while enjoying the concert and exploring the grounds until it was time to go. A great evening at Kennedy Space Center and I look forward to the next visit. Beam me up, Scotty. (Josh Hallett has a nice post on this attraction at his blog.)

Florida Attractions Association Conference

Just attended the Florida Attractions Association Conference at Hawk's Cay Resort on Duck Key, Florida and heard some great speakers like Judy Randall and Josh Hallett.

The main message this year was that attraction audiences are changing their needs in some very fundamental ways and the Industry needs to keep up. Research is showing that travellers want more choices and less structure than in the past. The ways people communicate a good or bad experience have accelerated and mushroomed on the Internet. "Word of Mouth" on steroids! Folks don't just tell their friends, they tell the whole world. Obviously, this can work for or against an attraction and the bottom line is we are seeing more transparency at these facilities. Better sweep that sidewalk.

A great experience involved Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, Florida. Hands down the best Dolphin show I have seen! The grounds are beautiful and the animals there are healthy and enthusiastic. Parrots, Dolphins, Turtles, Sharks, Fish, Sea Lions, Seals and more. The natural setting is wonderful and the staff there is top notch. A real treat.

The Circleline Sightseeing Cruise from Pier 83 in New York City is very popular and it's easy to see why. Big ship with plenty of room inside and out. Two decks so you can find a spot for photos and their are plenty. The New York City skyline, The Statue of Liberty, The Brooklyn Bridge and more on this narrated adventure. They even pointed out Ground Zero from the ship. (Yes, you could take the Staten Island Ferry for free but it's not like this.) Treat yourself and hop aboard Circleline.

I loved the roomy outdoor decks and a snack shop is available onboard. The ride is stable. Two hours fly by and I got to meet folks from all over the world as we "ooohed and aaahed" over the Statue of Liberty. Really good.

Quiet on the set!

This was my favorite tour in New York City! The guide is amazing and the content is funny, interesting and enjoyable. The New York TV and Movie Sites Tour starts at 11am daily next to Ellen's Stardust Diner. For a treat, spend some time with the Diner's singing wait staff!

The three hours flies by as one filming site after another is showcased on this tour. We even got treats! We saw current and classic sites, learned about the TV and Movie industry, best sites to spot a celebrity or see something filmed and where the stars lived. It was action packed. I appreciated several opportunities to step off the very nice shuttle bus for short walks to great sites like the "Friends" opening scene building (pictured) and the Cosby Show House.

What an adventure! We even sang theme songs. Got so much out of this tour and would do it again. (They also do a "Sex in the City" and "Soprano" tour.) One of the best tours I've taken anywhere. A must do in New York City.

New York, New York

The New York Official Heritage Tour in New York City is a slice of native pie. In partnership with the History Channel, this tour is all about the Big Apple from a local's perspective and a great overview of downtown. The red trolley rolls past the popular sites like Times Square and Wall Street, while the historic tour guide relates the history, triumps and tragedies of this fascinating town. I enjoyed the insider perspective on history, politics and events.

This tour lasts about two hours and you have hop on/off privileges, if you wish. Departs at 10am, 12, 2 and 4pm daily. Basically, it covers information you wouldn't always hear on a regular city tour with more emphasis on New York City historical events, not just sites. A real treat for the history buff and a nice way to see the city.

Meet me at the Empire State Building

King Kong move over. Dangling 1050 feet above New York City at the top of the Empire State Building, I was King of the World. Astonishing views in every direction. Even though the thermometer was hovering around 6 degrees during my visit, I couldn't feel the cold...much.

The ESB is such a New York City Icon that you must visit. Pick your times because it does get crowded. Since they are open from 8am until 2am, you have many choices but some of the least crowded times are 8am and between 3-5pm. Eveyone goes through security so be prepared. You can bypass the ticket line with advanced purchase but you will have to wait as needed. For an additional $15 you can visit the smaller enclosed 102 Floor observatory (tickets only on site) and gift shops and food are available upstairs.

Despite the cattle call feel at certain points, the experience is terrific and exciting. Bring a good camera and say hello to Kong for me! (If you like the view from above try the Top of the Rock , too.

Waxing artistic in New York City

So...I think I saw them move. The wax figures at Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum in New York City. Just out of the corner of my eye... has that ever happened to you? Wierd. The famous and the celebrated are captured here for all to see. What a great time capsule into history! After climbing up the grand staircase and riding the elevator to the top floor, my eye was greeted with celebrities filling the room. Woody Allen, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt. It went on and on. You work your way down the building through galleries that are roughly grouped into categories like sports, singers, etc. Here's a bonus you shouldn't miss. A short haunted trail. You can bypass this but it is a treat. Don't want to spoil it for you but the guy inside was top notch! Made me jump. Madam Tussaud's is great fun with plenty of opportunites to shop and eat throughout the facility. Do me a favor...if you see one move...let me know.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City is bustling with activity. Tourists, locals and students all move in a dance of delight through the galleries and floors of this wonderful Museum. Every corner you turn a new surprise is waiting. The collection includes over 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects as well as over 300,000 books, artist books and periodicals. To say the collection is enormous is an understatement. You could spend several days here just discovering what you wanted to study. If you have the time, they offer many educational programs for all levels. The layout allows you to linger where your interests take you and with excellent food onsite in several venues, you can take your time. Monet, Cezanne, Lumiere, Van Gogh, Picasso and so much more. Be inspired!

Ground Zero

The space where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood in New York City is under construction. The new Freedom Tower will be the world's tallest building at 1776 feet. It's amazing to stand on the spot. So many people walk by and look silently at this reminder of September 11th. Many begin to cry while others just walk away quickly or stand unable to move. Every trip to New York City should include a stop here. To remember...

Post Katrina

I'm not sure what I can add to the discussion about New Orleans, Louisiana almost two years since Hurricane Katrina changed the area forever. I feel compelled to say something...

"You can stand on Bourbon Street and the sounds of Jazz will wash over you as the deep smells of bread pudding and coffee laced with chicory fill your nose."

The New Orleans that many folks remember and love is still there, although it is harder to find. It is easy to think that everything is fine when you visit but much has changed. For the locals who still live there, basic services are a challenge. Water, electricity, banking, groceries and all the things we take for granted are slow in returning to "normal". There is a staffing shortage and many former residents never returned to the area. New arrivals are filling in the gaps and the new cultural influences on the town will change it too. This is a city in transition.

Some want it to return to the way it was and some want it to become something new. I'm not sure what will happen in the end but I am sure that we need to be willing to visit New Orleans and participate in her recovery. It's the right thing to do.

Who ya gonna call?

We met at Rev. Zombie's Voodoo Shop on St. Peter Street and I knew we were in for a treat. Our guide, Midian, was dressed in leather from head to toe and had the "look". You know, the look that he knows something you don't but if you follow along he will reveal his secrets to you. Well, he did and them some.

The Haunted History walking Ghost Tour in New Orleans, Louisiana is top notch! It is theatrical but not silly and the stories are good for all ages. This is one of the best Ghost Tours I have been on and I would do it again.

Not only did we hear great stories from a great storyteller but halfway through the tour we stopped at the wonderful “Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop” bar where we warmed up and heard tales of hauntings that took place in the building. It is a unsettling with the candlelight in the “actual” location. We even got a creepy Vampire story as a bonus.

The best part is that the tales are told in a "you decide" style for any non-believers in the group. Excellent storytelling sets this tour apart and leaves everyone satisfied. Do you believe?

The New Orleans Super City Tour is a great way to start your visit in New Orleans, Louisiana. Starting at the river front near the JAX brewery building, you travel in comfortable shuttle buses and learn the amazing history of the Crescent City.

The cultural influences in this area are enormous from the food to the music to the customs. This tour gives you an insiders view of all that is "Nawlin's" and will have you saying "ayeeeee" in no time! (The focus is not on Katrina for this tour since they have a special tour for that but, of course, it is mentioned.)

I really enjoyed hearing about the history of the city and the many countries that influence every facet. A highlight is stopping at St. Louis cemetery #3 for a quick tour. The elaborate sculptures in this above ground graveyard are striking. We talked about Carnival and Mardi Gras, the best places to eat and the state of the City now. Very nice. After this tour, you can explore the city with confidence.

Spirits in the night

A walking Ghost Tour in New Orleans, Louisiana just seems natural. The mood, the buildings, everything works. I'm a fan of Ghost Tours and often learn unexpected history that you don't get on daytime tours.

We started from the JAX brewery building and walked to our first spot at Jackson Square. The guide shared with us the rich history of New Orleans and the triumphs and tragedies that lead many to believe that the town is haunted.

Site after site was revealed to be haunted until you began to feel that every building had a story! Our intrepid guide took us all around the French Quarter until we finished near the Church. We left creepier and wiser than when we started.

My Father served as a Marine in World War II.

My Mother was a "Rosie the Riveter" building planes for Airco during the war. They never spoke much about it but I knew they were proud to serve their country.

That is why the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana meant so much to me. It helped me to understand that time in my parents lives and in America's history. It is an important place to visit.

You can't miss the location on Magazine Street right across from a huge mural of the American Flag raising at Iwo Jima. My Uncle Bob was laying communication lines down the other side of the hill when they were raising that flag behind him.

Inside the lobby a great collection of vehicles big and small for land, air and sea are on display. The main building tells the story of World War II from start to finish in vivid detail. There are warnings that some exhibits are not suitable for children. The story must be told, though.

Many Veterans are there. Some rubbing their eyes. Others stand squeezing the hand of the person next to them. Most are alone and silent, taking in the exhibits. I think of my parents and the reality of War. The times that forged their personalities. The experiences that changed their lives. I feel that I understand them better now. Kilroy was indeed here.

New Orleans, Louisiana is a perfect setting to talk about Vampires. When I signed up for Haunted History's Vampire Tour I didn't know what to expect. Would a "Vampire" lead the tour? Could I expect Vampires leaping out of the shadows to attack me? Did I have enough garlic?

My fears fluttered into the night as our guide greeted us in front of St. Louis Church dressed in regular clothes and no sharp teeth. This was not too theatrical and very interesting. We learned about the history of Vampires in lore, legend, literature and film. We visited sites where the movie "Interview with a Vampire" was filmed. We heard tales of New Orleans incidents that many consider evidence that vampires do exist.

In the end, I was entertained, delighted and just a little creeped out. I started back to my hotel alone as a light mist of rain started. Could Vampires be real I thought turning down Pirate's Alley? Really, some of the local stories were very disturbing. Shadowy figures, unsolved murders, dark alleys...then I heard the footsteps behind me.

Something's fishy

The Audubon Aquarium in New Orleans, Louisiana is right on the Riverwalk near the French Quarter. Great jellyfish displays and shark exhibits! An IMAX theater just adds to the experience.

The layout is designed for exploring and surprises come around every corner. Like the Mississippi exhibit. It is easy to miss tucked back behind the gift shop but a must do. You are greeted by a large white alligator and the whole area is designed to resemble the bayou. Native fish of all sizes and shapes can be seen and it is interesting to find out what is under the river (or under your feet!) Very prehistoric. Don't forget to look up.

One of my favorite areas is the Rain forest. Tree houses, waterfalls, parrots and lush greenery fill your senses here. Something is definitely fishy here.

Zoo me

The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans looks great, post-Katrina, and you can see that lots of work has been done. From the moment you are greeted by a flock of Flamingos at the entrance to the instant you see the White Tiger lounging in the sun, you are hooked!

This is a place you can spend the day and I really enjoyed the effort they made to recreate the geographic environments of the animals. Native Statues, Asian shrines, Mayan temples in the Jungle and Bayou houses on the swamp all add to the atmosphere and make you feel immersed in the origins of the species. The roaming peacocks were a favorite of mine. You can truly lose yourself in this wonderful place in New Orleans.

Trying to recover

(Heavy Sigh...) If touring the results of a natural disaster can be done tastefully, then the Hurricane Katrina Tour in New Orleans, Louisiana has managed it. I won't pretend that it was easy to hear the stories and see the damage but the guide was respectful and compelling. We travelled to the hardest hit areas and heard the very personal stories of hardship and recovery. This tour is a good reminder of how quickly your life can change. It is a tribute to the folks who are helping New Orleans recover. It is a testament to the residents who didn't give up or give in. Less than two years after Katrina much has been done and there is much work still. I'm glad I was able to see it...

Oh say can you see?

I cried... I didn't intend it...I wasn't expecting it. But I did. It got to me.

The multi-media Show at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is called "Freedom Rising" and is one of the most powerful experiences I've had at an attraction.

While you sit in a modern theatre-in-the-round a live narrator combined with music and images explains the story of America. It's triumphs and tragedies. It's struggles and shining moments. How the Constitution has pulled citizens together as one nation and divided them at times. "We the People" comes to life in a crescendo of emotion. Then you walk out to the interactive areas to participate and learn more. I truly enjoyed the Founder's Hall and original documents here but what got to me was the end of the show "Freedom Rising". After immersing ourselves in the grand story of America's history and the people who sacrificed so much along the way, the narrator looked right at me, pointed and said, "Now it's up to you." ...that's when I cried.

Under the Sea

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this Aquarium! Don't let the location keep you from going. The Adventure Aquarium is located in Camden, New Jersey just across the river from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. River Shuttle is the best method but you can also take a bus or taxi there.

What a treat. "Scuba Santa" was visiting when I was there and the kids went berserk. Well... I did too. The huge Ocean Theater is so much fun to watch with a theater sized viewing window and stadium seating. Everyone got a great view of Santa and the sea creatures in the tank. Great exhibits, touch a shark, 4D theater (showing Sponge Bob), Penguin Island and more. Shark Realm was one of my favorites with a 40 foot viewing tunnel that makes you feel part of their world. After visiting Jules Verne Gallery where creepy ocean creatures like Giant Spider Crabs and Jellyfish lurk I am convinced that this is one of the best Aquariums around.

Let Freedom Ring

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was pivotal in creating our new United States. Visiting the places where Franklin, Jefferson and other founders met is awe-inspiring. No visit would be complete without seeing the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. But be prepared. To protect these National treasures the security is high. It's very similar to Airport security measures so factor this into your visit.

A good place to start, of course, is the visitor's center to get oriented and a timed entrance ticket for the Independence Hall tour. Although these attractions are free they are organized from this location.

Do spend some time reading panels and plaques for a complete story and don't miss Benjamin Franklin's Burial Plot just down the street and the site where Thomas Jefferson completed the Declaration of Independence. Everywhere you turn in Philadelphia, History winks back!
